Janis Joplin - Live In Honolulu 1970
This performance is exciting and Janis & the Full Tilt Boogie Band serve up one stormin' set. It is obvious that Janis is either drunk and stoned, or both. The in between song banter shows Janis getting the crowd riled up by asking them if they are ready to rock. The crowd is crazy during this show and the announcer is constantly telling them to settle down and take their seats. At one point Janis tells the guy " Hey...I'll be responsible for any damage so split!" The crowd cheers and she then states "You figure out what it costs and I'll pay for it." Many Joplin staples are here like a groovy version of "Summertime" and even some songs off her Kozmic Blues album like "Maybe" and Kozmic Blues." At the end of the show you can hear the crowd almost tearing the place apart as they cheer for more and stomp their feet. Little did they know that Janis had already left and was off into the Hawaiian night.

Some more Janis Joplin rarities. I can never seem to get enough of this amazing artist. In this collection we have the infamous "typewriter tapes" which feature Janis Joplin with Jorma Kaukonen, who would go on to be the guitarist for Jefferson Airplane. These were recorded in 1964 and it has Margareta Kaukonen on typewriter in the background. The song Codine was a song Janis did in her early folk days playing coffee houses. Former band mate James Gurley of Big Brother & the Holding Company got a hold of some of these recordings and added guitar and studio magic to them. This song sounds like it could be released today. The song So Sad to be Alone was written by Janis and sent to a friend she had in college. It is Janis accompanying herself on auto harp, and it has her singing in a soft melodic voice that many people aren't aware that she had. The rest of the set is comprised of studio outtakes from the Big Brother album Cheap Thrills, which was released in 1968. Also included is a version of Ball and Chain that is out of this world. Janis almost seems possessed in this performance as she wails away to Big Brothers psych-rock blues. It was recorded for KSAN Radio in San Francisco. The last track is Janis Joplin's last t.v. interview with Dick Cavett in 1970.

Discs 7-9: Various Outtakes and Live Sets
This set of archival recordings lets us witness the formation of arguably the most powerful and expressive voice in rock history. From the earliest known performances in the small bars of Texas to the first sessions with Big Brother to her mesmerizing live shows, Janis never left behind her raw roots. She drew upon them to impel emotional performances as if by exposing her pain she gained power over her past and transformed it into a gift. In these newly sourced pearls, we can hear as never before the birth and fast burning flame of Janis Joplin.
Included are outtakes and unreleased songs from the 1968 "Cheap Thrills" studio sessions, demos for the 1969 Kozmic Blues album and vast improvements on all existing vintage (1962-65) live recordings. The vintage recordings, in particular, are wonderful and although we had some of this material from the long out of print "Janis" movie soundtrack vinyl release, this collection has 39 (!) tracks recorded between 1962-65 including the ubiquitous "Typewriter Tapes" made by Jorma. The final CD finally unchains the urgent expression and lets it be heard in a complete Big Brother concert from 1967. Sit down by your window, put this set on, and blow all your blues away.
